Why Wings Matter

An F1 car's rear wing generates downforce by angling a surface to deflect air upward and back, creating downward pressure on the car. More downforce means more grip in corners. The cost is drag -- the force resisting forward motion on straights.

The fundamental tension in F1 aerodynamics is this tradeoff. High downforce equals fast corners but slow straights. Low downforce equals fast straights but slow corners. Teams spend enormous resources trying to generate downforce efficiently: maximum grip for minimum drag penalty.

Ferrari's Active Wing

The 2026 regulations permit a new generation of active aerodynamic elements. Ferrari's rear wing exploits this by making the wing angle variable during the lap.

Aero mode on straights: The wing rotates to a shallower angle, closer to flat. This reduces the surface area creating downforce and, crucially, reduces drag. On a long straight this translates directly to higher top speed.

Downforce mode in corners: The wing returns to a steeper angle. Downforce rises, rear grip increases, and the driver can carry more speed through high-speed corners.

The transition between modes is handled by the car's onboard systems, responding to speed, braking input, and steering angle. No driver input required.

Why This Goes Beyond DRS

Previous active aerodynamics in F1 -- the DRS introduced in 2011 -- was deliberately limited. Drivers activated it manually, only in designated zones, only for overtaking. It reduced drag but did not actively manage downforce.

The 2026 approach manages the wing continuously throughout the lap as an integral part of the car's performance. It represents a shift toward aerodynamic systems that respond to conditions in real time rather than requiring a deliberate driver action at specific points on the circuit.
