For context: a V8 petrol engine producing similar power typically weighs 180-220 kg before accounting for the gearbox, cooling system, and exhaust. The Koenigsegg Dark Matter electric motor makes that comparison look absurd.
Raxial Flux Architecture
Most electric motors choose between axial flux (disc-shaped, high torque at low speeds) or radial flux (cylindrical, high speed at high RPMs). Each has a ceiling.
Koenigsegg combined both into a single unit: the raxial flux design captures the torque characteristics of axial and the speed characteristics of radial simultaneously. It required entirely new manufacturing methods and does not exist in any other production vehicle.
Six-Phase Electrical Architecture
A standard electric motor uses three electrical phases. Dark Matter uses six. Doubling the phases means six overlapping power pulses per revolution rather than three -- dramatically smoother torque delivery, better thermal distribution across more windings, and improved fault tolerance. If one phase develops an issue, the motor continues operating on the remaining five.
Material Choices
Housing, stator, and rotor are all carbon fibre. Most motors use aluminium or steel here because carbon fibre is difficult to work with in electromagnetic environments. Koenigsegg's ability to make it work is a significant part of why the motor weighs 39 kg.
Integration
Dark Matter is designed to pair with Koenigsegg's Light Speed Transmission -- a 9-speed multi-clutch unit capable of gear changes in under one millisecond. The motor response and transmission speed are matched so power delivery across shifts is seamless.
