A turbocharged engine produces boost by spinning a turbine on exhaust gases. At low RPMs there is not enough exhaust flow to spool the turbo quickly -- so there is a brief but noticeable delay between pressing the throttle and feeling the power. In a hypercar, that delay is unacceptable.
What IPAS Does
The Instant Power Assist System pairs a lightweight lithium-ion battery with an electric motor mounted alongside the twin-turbo V8. When the driver hits the throttle, the electric motor fires instantly -- delivering torque before the turbo has spooled. By the time the combustion side is producing full boost, the electric assist has already bridged the gap.
No hesitation. No surge. A continuous wall of acceleration from the moment the foot moves.
The Numbers
The combined system produces 916 hp. The V8 contributes 727 hp; the electric motor adds 179 hp on demand. Together they push the P1 to 100 km/h in under 2.8 seconds.
The Bigger Point
IPAS is significant beyond its performance figures because of what it represents: hybrid power treated as a genuine engineering advantage rather than a concession to emissions regulations. McLaren used electrification to make the car faster and more responsive than a pure combustion engine could be. That philosophy now defines the direction of every serious high-performance manufacturer.
